Motor City East - PBL- Est. 2023
Founded in 1917, Hartford Memorial Baptist Church stands as the first African American church on Detroit’s west side and has served as a pillar of faith, justice, and community leadership for more than a century. Originally established under Reverend Edgar Edwards as the International Interracial Interdenominational Institutional Baptist Church, Hartford Memorial has long been dedicated to fighting for the liberation, equality, and empowerment of all people. Through its ministries, the church played a vital role in major civil and equal rights efforts, including organizing workers within Ford Motor Company and the United Automobile Workers, opposing the exclusion of African Americans from the World War II-era Sojourner Truth Housing Project, and supporting the 1986 Dearborn economic boycott.
The Hartford Memorial basketball franchise — the Hartford Angels — proudly carries that same legacy of strength, unity, and purpose onto the court. Inspired by the church’s enduring mission and guided by the belief that “You may not belong to Hartford, but Hartford belongs to everyone,” the Angels compete with passion, discipline, and faith. The program is built on consistency, communication, teamwork, and continuous growth, while emphasizing spiritual development alongside athletic excellence. Whether during games, practices, or fellowship afterward, the Hartford Angels strive to embody the fighting spirit and leadership that has defined Hartford Memorial for generations, trusting Jehovah Nissi to lead them into victory.
