Hartford Memorial’s turnaround season was built on culture, consistency and a coach who believed the program was ready to change its trajectory.

There are good seasons.

There are breakthrough seasons.

And then there are seasons that change the direction of a program.

For Hartford Memorial, the 2026 PBL season was all three.

At the center of that transformation was Coach Jenaa Grier, who has been named the 2026 PBL Coach of the Year following one of the league’s most impressive turnarounds.

After consecutive 3–7 regular seasons in 2024 and 2025, Hartford Memorial entered the 2026 campaign with something to prove. By the end of the regular season, the team had completely rewritten the narrative.

Hartford finished 7–3, earned the No. 1 seed in the Renaissance Region of the PBL Big 16 Tournament and advanced to the Elite Eight.

That isn't simply improvement.

That's a program changing direction.

THE TURNAROUND

Grier inherited a Hartford Memorial program that had struggled to find consistent success over the previous two seasons. The results in 2024 and 2025 were identical: 3–7 regular-season records.

But 2026 looked different from the opening weeks.

Hartford played with greater consistency, physicality and defensive discipline. The team developed a clear identity and, more importantly, bought into it.

The numbers reflected the growth.

The statistical improvement was important, but the bigger story was the change in how Hartford competed.

The team became tougher.

More disciplined.

More consistent.

And more difficult to play against.

WINNING WHEN IT MATTERED

Hartford's breakthrough wasn't built on one signature victory. It was the product of a season filled with meaningful performances.

The team opened the season with consecutive victories over Court Runners and We Here, immediately signaling that this Hartford team was going to be different.

Then came one of the season's biggest statements.

Hartford defeated Sonic Boom, 68–60, proving that the team could compete—and win—against strong PBL competition.

Later in the regular season, Hartford delivered another impressive performance, defeating Money Team, 66–57.

Those victories helped establish Hartford as a legitimate contender and ultimately positioned the team at the top of the Renaissance Region.

THE BIG 16 TEST

The regular season established Hartford as a team to watch.

The Big 16 Tournament provided the opportunity to prove it.

As the No. 1 seed in the Renaissance Region, Hartford Memorial entered the tournament with expectations—and handled them.

In the opening round, Hartford defeated Strictly Business, 43–36, advancing to the Elite Eight.

The tournament run eventually came to an end against Money Team in a rematch, but the result couldn't diminish what Hartford had accomplished.

Hartford Memorial had gone from consecutive 3–7 seasons to becoming one of the top seeds in the PBL's Big 16 field.

That is the definition of a breakthrough.

MORE THAN A RECORD

Coach of the Year awards are often reduced to wins and losses.

But Hartford's story goes deeper than the final record.

Grier helped establish a culture built around defense, physicality, accountability and competing every possession.

She got her players to believe in an identity.

She helped turn close moments into winning moments.

And she helped a program that had experienced back-to-back losing seasons believe that a different standard was possible.
